The days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping and the leaves are changing colours. Now that summer is resolutely giving way to fall, it is time to think about getting your running gear up to speed for the incoming season. But how do you choose the right gear you’ll need for running in autumn?

Discover our tips and tricks for a stress-free approach to fall running.

1. Fabrics

A good fall running outfit should be made of breathable synthetic fibre such as :

  • Polyester
  • Elastane
  • Polyamide
  • Gore-Tex

While cotton retains sweat and keeps the skin wet and cold (to be avoided for fall training), running fabrics are thermo-regulators. This means they maintain the body’s temperature while evacuating sweat and keeping the skin dry.

2. Multilayering

Dressing for your run is all about the onion principle! This is called multilayering. These are the layers you want from head to toe.

The Top

LAYER 1
BREATHABLE
LAYER 2
INSULATED
LAYER 3
PROTECTED
A running t-shirt. A running shirt that keeps moisture and cold out of the base layers of clothing, and allows you to warm up after training. A windbreaker in case of wind or rain.

The Bottom

Running leggings, to keep the thighs from rubbing together. They help wick away sweat to keep you dry and comfortable.

3. The Essentials

1

Jacket
When you invest in a good jacket made specifically for jogging, you’ll enjoy plenty of advantages during your fall runs, such as:

  • Insulation: The jacket is made to be water resistant, but not waterproof. This protects you from the elements without trapping the sweat in.
  • The Hood: It protects you from the cold and rain at head-level.
  • The Cut: It is snug to maximize aerodynamic movements.
  • Engineered materials: They are made of polyester fibre and designed to be breathable and to evacuate perspiration, while keeping in body heat. A thin layer of insulation (brushed fleece, micro fleece, etc.) is added to help maintain body heat and make post-workout recovery easier.

2

Bra
Don't neglect your choice of bra.
A comfortable, effective sports bra will make all the difference while running. The fit and support are crucial to allow you to enjoy your training and to give it your best.

3

The top
Choose a comfortable, breathable top.
It is best to choose a fabric specifically designed for running to avoid any unforeseen discomfort.

4

The bottom
For fall, you will want long running leggings for good coverage and leg support.
A soft and stretchable fabric that is snug to the body gives a good amplitude of movement. Slip them on and you are ready to go.

5

Running shoes
Of course, selecting the right running shoes is the most essential step of gearing up. Take into account the type of surface you will be running on.
There are a few categories to choose from.

Running shoes

With their advanced cushioning and comfort, high-quality running shoes are made to support the foot while promoting natural motions.
They also usually have some kind of reflective element to be visible in the evening.

4. Safety Accessories

The September sun rises later and sets earlier. For early morning and late evening runners, this is the season to have the quiet streets mostly to themselves. You’ll need a headlamp and reflective accessories for complete peace of mind.

  • Headlamp
Pointer: choose a lightweight headlamp so that it does not bother you. Make sure that it is fastened tight enough so that it does not budge, even with sudden movements.
  • Reflective accessories
Whether you wear reflective laces, bracelets or bands, when you know that your presence on the streets among drivers and cyclists is easily noticed, you can enjoy your run the way it should be – with peace of mind and no sudden surprises.

Now that you are geared up and have nothing to fear, get out there and enjoy jogging in the fall!
