Outdoor clothing and winter sports: How to choose what to wear

Don’t let the cold and snow stop you from enjoying a great day outdoors with your family. The trick is to have the right clothing to wear outdoors, and know how to wear them.
Follow our tips for staying warm this winter—from head to toe!
Choose the right coat and snow pants
When buying winter gear, keep in mind these should be waterproof, breathable, adjustable, and adaptable.
Choose warm mitts or gloves
All else being equal, mittens are warmer than gloves, since they keep your fingers together for warmth and allow you to use hand warmers. They should also be breathable and waterproof.
Choose winter boots
Winter boots should be warm, comfortable, waterproof, and high enough to ensure snow doesn’t get in—which can spell the end to a fun activity.
When trying on winter boots, make sure you have about 1 cm of space in front of your foot. Tight boots are more likely to make your feet cold.
Choose socks
Wearing 100% synthetic socks (such as polyester) under a warmer pair is a great way to reduce dampness in your boots while also avoiding blisters. Remember to bring a change of socks with you!
Go for layers
A great way to stay warm and dry while enjoying outdoor activities this winter is to layer your clothing. This system—also known as dressing like an onion—has the advantage of being modular. If you’re too warm, remove a layer—or add one if you get cold!
- 1. Base layer : Underwear, undergarments, socks, and tights made of synthetic material or wool. Merino-type base layers are some of the best options, as they are ultralight, soft, warm, breathable, and antibacterial.
- 2. Intermediate layer : Fleece or other shirt.
- 3. External layer : A coat that will cut the wind, precipitation, or both.
